WHO IS THIS JESUS?—Part 1

We learn much about Jesus Christ just in the opening 3 verses:

v.1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, without Him nothing was made that has been made.

1) ESTABLISHES the POSITION of Jesus Christ
JESUS CHRIST is GOD

Why so important??
**Only God, being without sin, could appropriately die an atoning death to pay for the sins of humanity

2) EMPHASIZES the PRE-EXISTENCE of Jesus Christ
JESUS CHRIST is SUPERNATURAL

Why so important??
**Jesus Christ is NOT just another human being
**Jesus Christ supersedes the aspect of natural law and time

3) EXHIBITS the PROMINENCE and POWER of Jesus Christ
JESUS CHRIST is CREATOR

Why so important??
**Jesus Christ is critical, crucial component that holds ALL THINGS together

v. 1-3 JESUS CHRIST is described as THE WORD

v. 4-9 JESUS CHRIST is described as THE LIGHT:

v.4-9 “In him was life and that life was the LIGHT of men. The LIGHT shines in the darkness and the darkness has not understood it (or overcome it). There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He himself was not the LIGHT; he came only as a witness to the LIGHT. The true LIGHT that gives LIGHT to every man was coming into the world.”

I. The LIGHT is a DESIGNATED PERSON

**Can’t be anybody else
**Won’t be somebody different

There is only ONE Jesus Christ

I Timothy 2:5-6 For there is ONE mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time.

II. The LIGHT fulfills a DISTINGUISHED PURPOSE

1) CONSTRUCTIVE—POSITIVE PURPOSE

John 10:10 “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows). Amp.

2) COMPREHENSIVE—UNIVERSAL PURPOSE

v.9 The true LIGHT that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

The TRUE Light offers hope and perspective to every man
But notice we have a choice in how we respond to the Light.

III. The LIGHT possesses DEMONSTRATIVE POWER

1) The world can’t figure it out
2) The world can’t shut it down

v.5 The LIGHT shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it and is unreceptive to it].

This gives tremendous HOPE to us as believers!

John 20:31 ...These [miraculous signs] are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
