Part 1 6/27/10 QUES: “Why do I do what I don’t want to do?” 1) THE PROBLEM: My Flesh! -Rom. 7:15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature/flesh. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. Mark Bubeck: The flesh is a built-in law of failure, making it impossible for the natural man to please or serve God. It is a compulsive inner force inherited from man's fall, which expresses itself in general and specific rebellion against God and His righteousness. The flesh can never be reformed or improved. The only hope for escape from the law of the flesh is its total execution and replacement by a new life in the Lord Jesus Christ. -Preventive: MT 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. -Since everyone struggles - 3 results of civil war. A) Confusion! B) Frustration! C) Discouragement! Rom. 7:24 I’ve tried everything and nothing helps. I’m at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? 2) GOD’S PROMISE is: Personal Freedom. John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. God has promised. THINK – ACT - FEEL A) Behind every self-defeating act is a lie that I believed. B) What is the truth? JN 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. How I Feel! What is True! 1) I feel unworthy, unacceptable! If people ever knew! 1) Eph 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. You’ve trusted Jesus! 2) I feel unrighteous; I’m still a horrible sinner! 2) 2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 3) I’m not special! Easily overlooked even by God… 3) Eph 1:4 Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love: Playground: Last one picked for the game? 4) I am in bondage! 4) Jn. 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Next weeks message builds on this! 5) I feel unloved, rejected! God couldn’t love me! 5) Rom. 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Don’t call God a liar! 6) I feel condemned! Guilt; shame! I know my own heart! 6) Rom. 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 7) I feel lost, separated from Christ! 7) 1 Jn. 5:11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 8) I am afraid of Satan! 8) 1 Jn. 4:4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 9) I am afraid of death! 9) 1 Cor. 15:54b "Death has been swallowed up in victory." 55 "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" 56 The sting of death is sin (unresolved, unforgiven), and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
