Start with 3rd relationship…
3) Jesus and His disciples!
A) Happiness…
B) Explanation of His act…
John 13:12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. Unlikely they did.
He gives them an example to follow…
V14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
C) Lessons on humility: V13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am.
Matt 18:1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"
2 He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3 And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Matt 20:20 Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor… "Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom."
V25 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Matt 23:11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
D) Status of the servant: Doulos = slave.
V16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
Application: V17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
4) Jesus & Judas! Hypocrisy
Acts 1:15-19 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus— 17 he was one of our number and shared in this ministry."
18 (With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
Jesus had 2 great concerns at this hour…
A) To fulfill the Word of God!
John 13:18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' 19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He.
-Fulfills: Ps 41:9 Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.
B) The Glory of God!
John 13:31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
We glorify God by loving as Christ loves…
John 13:34-35 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
