Cure for a Troubled Heart!
#1 2/21/10
John 14:1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Heart: Hebrew – Seat of emotions, Bowels, Soul, The real you
1) Why Were The Disciples Troubled …
A) Jesus announced one would betray Him!
B) Jesus warned Peter he would deny Him 3x’s!
John 13:37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."
38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
C) They realized Jesus was really leaving!
John 13:33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
2) How did Jesus calm their hearts?
Assurances…
A) He reminded them they were going to heaven!
John 13:36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?"
Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."
John 14:2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
B) Heaven is described as…
1. A Kingdom: 2 Peter 1:11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
2. An Inheritance: 1 Peter 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade — kept in heaven for you
3. A Country: Heb 11:15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16a Instead, they were longing for a better country — a heavenly one.
4. A City: Heb 11:16b Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
5. A Home: John 14:2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.
Rev 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
5 He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."
