Faithfulness to Christ!
The Farmer #4
2 TIM 2 1/31/10

2 Tim 2:1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

Now Paul uses the example of a Farmer…
2 Tim 2:6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. V7 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.

1 Cor 3:5-9 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8 The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. 9 For we are God's fellow workers...

Point:

Practical truths found in image of the farmer & the field.
1) The successful Farmer has to work hard! V6a

Prov. 24:30 I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; V31 thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. V32 I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw: V33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-- V34 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.

A) Personal growth is hard work!
B) Ministry is hard work!

Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

MT 13:18 "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. 22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. 23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."

Sower = Anyone who shares Word of God
Seed = God’s Word
Satan = snatches seed
Soil = condition of the heart…

4 types of heart: 1. Hard – hearted
2. Hasty – hearted
3. Half – hearted
4. Whole hearted

2) A Farmer needs patience!

Jas 5:7 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient

MT 6:31 So do not worry, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?' 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

Mt 6: 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

3) A Farmer deserves his share of the harvest!

2 Tim 2:6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.
A) Financially: 1 Tim 5:17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, "Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain," and "The worker deserves his wages."

B) Spiritually: Those who share God’s Word with others are the first to enjoy its blessing!
Challenge: Want to grow? Teach SS; Children’s church; Help with the youth!

How do I become faithful… look at the Farmer…
1. Work hard!
2. Allow trials to teach me patience = trust!
3. Enjoy the harvest!
