Faithfulness to Christ!
2 TIM 2 1/10/10
Lam 3:22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. V23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
-Terms: Faithfulness; Endurance; Perseverance; Steadfastness; be Strong (Big Bold – 1 at a time)
1 Cor 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, (Military) always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord. (Farmer)
1 Cor. 16:13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. (Military)
Heb 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Athletic)
2 Tim 2:1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
Background: (leave space)
2Tim 1:15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.
2 Tim 4:9 Do your best to come to me quickly, 10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.
2 Tim 4:14 Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done. 15 You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message. V16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.
Paul gives Timothy several examples to think about to understand faithfulness.
1) Paul himself. 2. Good Soldier. 3. Athlete. 4. Farmer.
Let’s consider the example of Paul’s faithfulness…
1) Paul
A) What didn’t detract Paul from ministry?
1. Warning against those who would lead others astray:
2 Cor 11:23 Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my own countrymen, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false brothers. 27 I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?
2. Personal testimony of faithfulness: 2Tim 4:6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
B) Where did this strength come from?
2 Tim 4:16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. 17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
C) Where will our strength come from to remain faithful?
1. It begins with a clear conversion!
2. It continues as we grow in God’s Word!
We must: Read it; Study it; Understand it; Memorize it.
3. Final glimpse as Paul says goodbye… 2 Tim 4:9 Do your best to come to me quickly, 10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. 12 I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.
D) The power of influence!
2 Tim 2:2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.
